How to Use This Site
Click on "Image Finder" to view the catalog, then scroll through the small images. Or if seeking specific subjects, enter a descriptive word in the "Search the Gallery" box or click on the down arrow in the "Place, Subject, Color," or other appropriate search boxes. Select your choice from the dropdown menu. Clicking on the small image or "info" will open a panel with the enlarged photo. Scroll down from the photo to see available sizes and pricing. Click on "Add to Lightbox" to hold photographs for consideration or click on "Add to Cart" to purchase.
Selecting and Comparing Images
Click on any thumbnail image in the gallery to enlarge it . If you want to consider it or compare it to others, just above the image that you enlarged from the thumbnail is the Luminous Lands catalogue number (e.g. CABS0001), and below that is the "Add to Lightbox" link. Click on "Add to Lightbox" to hold your selection — along with others if you like - for your review and until you make your choice. It will show there as a thumbnail and can be enlarged again to help you decide before you place an order.
If you want to use the Lightbox as a Favorites List, where you can store potential photo choices even when you leave the Luminous Lands site or turn off your computer, complete the registration process. Doing so will establish a cookie that recognizes your sign-in and maintains items you place in your Lightbox or shopping cart until you either order or clear them.
Large Prints
Because these photographs were made using different cameras and different formats, the maximum print-sizes possible for producing quality images are variable.
To locate all of the images that can be printed to a maximum print size of interest to you, click on the Image Finder, then click on "Print Size," located with the other image search features above the small "thumbnail" images. From the menu that drops down select larger formats that offer relatively larger print sizes over smaller formats, and all of the photographs on this website that match the size you selected will appear. Click on the images you like, to enlarge them from the thumbnail size, and view the print sizes and prices under the image.
When deciding what the maximum print size should be for any given image, its proposed location — in relation to people expected to view the print — should be considered. Printing an extreme size of a small file with the intention of hanging the print in a narrow hallway — where viewers eyes will be close to the print — is likely to emphasize the relative lack of resolution. The same print displayed above the eyeline on a wall with a high ceiling in a large room, may be quite pleasing.
Custom Print Sizes
Custom print sizes are variations in the available standard print sizes shown under a photograph enlarged from the thumbnail in the Image Finder. A client may want a print that exceeds the those measurements. Custom print sizes are by arrangement. Custom Panoramic Prints
Some images in the Gallery/Image Finder are the central part of a series of multiple overlapping shots that can be melded together and printed as a large panorama. These can be printed in variable sizes to order. To identify these, click on the down arrow in the "Print Size" search box located above the thumbnail images on the Gallery/Image Finder page, and select "Custom Panoramas." The screen will show all of the images that may be printed as panoramas. Placing Print Orders
Ordering Online
Choose any image from the Image Finder or your Lightbox. Click on the image to enlarge it from thumbnail size. Scroll down the enlarged image and see the print sizes available. Click on the "Add to Cart" link found under one of the print sizes indicated for the particular image.
To view the contents of your shopping cart click on the "View Cart" button. Click on the "Checkout" button when ready to place your order. Call or e-mail Luminous Lands if you have problems or questions about print selection, how to order, or charges.
Luminous Lands Photography accepts Visa, MasterCard, American Express or PayPal as payment options.
California residents add 8.5% sales tax to the total price of the print (shopping cart will automatically add the sales tax for online orders).
Digital Files
Editorial and commercial clients seeking digital files to be sent using File Transfer Protocol may contact Luminous Lands at info@luminouslands.com or 916 692 8523 or 831 424 3648. Use the alpha numeric code appearing under each image, as in "CABS0001." Luminous Lands does not sell rights-free images.
Limited Editions?
At present I am not selling prints in limited editions. I think Ansel Adams, who never sold in limited editions, had the right idea. I do record the number of prints sold by catalogue number and print size, and that information is printed on the information sheet that comes with the print for attachment to the back of the print by the framer.
Printing, Shipping, Delivery
Normally, buyers will receive order confirmation by e-mail (or phone) within 24 to 48 hours. Once Luminous Lands receives the print order, you will receive an email confirming the catalogue number of the image, the print size, and an image title or description, all intended to ensure we print the image you want. The e-mail will include, for domestic shipping, the UPS tracking number and expected delivery date. Deliveries are not made on weekends. Processing, from order to shipping, is normally within one week, but may require more time, depending on the number of other prior orders being completed. Buyers will be informed of any potential delays.
When I am in the field, making pictures, print production and direct communication might be delayed. Buyers placing orders or otherwise communicating with Luminous Lands will be notified of any such delays on the luminouslands.com site and when calling 916 692 8523 or 510 209 2328.
Prints Ship Unframed
Prints are shipped either boxed flat or rolled in a mailing tube (larger prints). All prints are shipped unframed and unmatted, allowing the buyer to work directly with his or her local framer to achieve the best display possible for the setting in which the print will be placed. Prints are shipped only to the name and address of the buyer.
Domestic Shipping/Insurance
Print prices for sales of standard size prints to U.S. residents (as listed in the pop-up panels that show the enlarged prints in the Gallery/Image Finder), include standard UPS ground shipping and insurance costs. The buyer pays all shipping/insurance for oversized and other custom prints, which can require special packaging. If overnight or air shipment is desired the client pays these charges. All print sales require a signature at delivery. Domestic ground delivery can require up to five to seven business days from the time the print is shipped.
International Shipping/Insurance
Shipping costs and insurance for international sales are separate from the purchase price and require contact with the buyer prior to ordering. The buyer pays these charges.
All International purchases are processed online only.
We ship orders outside of the United States using US Air Mail (7-10 business days) or Federal Express International Economy (5-7 business days), or UPS International (up to 12 business days, depending on type of service selected). International purchases may incur duties or taxes at customs and be opened and searched; customs charges are the buyer's responsibility. Luminous Lands does not get involved in customs issues.
Ordering Offline
Besides purchasing prints online, U.S. residents can also place orders by e-mail, telephone, or mail, and these will be processed when payment (by check, credit card information, or Paypal) is received and clears.
Find an image either in the gallery or the Lightbox (if you previously placed it there). First, click on the image to enlarge it from thumbnail size. Scroll down the enlarged image and see the print sizes available.
When ordering offline, by check for example, or credit card, prints can be selected and ordered by catalogue number — the alphanumeric code — appearing under each image, as in "CABS0001."
The catalogue numbers are easy to transpose, so supplemental information is a helpful confirmation of offline orders. With your payment, please include:
* the image catalogue number
* the print size and price shown
* a short phrase describing the scene, e.g. "lavender sky over blue sea"
* and whether the print you are ordering is oriented vertically or horizontally
The above information included in your offline order ensures that you receive the print you expect.
When you order offline we will also need the same information you would include for online ordering:
your name; complete billing/shipping address, which are one in the same — we ship only to billing addresses; and phone number.
If paying by check, make checks payable to Luminous Lands Photography.
We accept mailed personal checks in addition to credit cards, which we process via our secure payment processor PayPal, as payment for print purchases. For credit card purchases include your name and contact information as your credit card carrier shows it, including phone number, the complete account number and the expiration date of the card.
For California residents living outside of Sacramento County this websire adds the required 7.5% sales tax to the purchase price for prints. For Sacramento County residents this website adds 8% sales tax to the purchase price for prints.

About Print Sizes
Prints are made with a surrounding white border that allows your framer to handle your print without touching the ink, and to facilitate a quality matte. The print sizes shown under each image on the luminouslands.com website indicate the size of the image as printed on the paper, and some slight variations, plus or minus, are possible; the actual size of the paper will be slightly larger than the image size.
Paper Surfaces
I normally select a satin or lustre paper. I almost never select a full gloss paper as the reflectance is so high it can compete with the image itself by mirroring spurious light rays. If you as the buyer have a preference for a particular surface other than the surface we normally use, you must let me know when you place the order.
Converting Dollars and Inches
Print sizes are shown in inches. 1 inch = 2.54 centimeters. Prices are in US dollars. Google "convert currency" to find the equivalent value in another country's currency.
Rush Orders
Rush orders on prints may include an additional cost premium, and the increase in cost due to overnight or rush shipping charges is also added to the standard price.
Signed/Unsigned Prints
Occasionally a buyer may request the print be signed. On request a signature can be placed on the white border surrounding the printed image, and during framing the matte can be placed to leave the signature visible.
I provide with each print a separate sheet that includes the Luminous Lands Photography logo, the photographer's signature, the date of the print, contact information, catalogue number of the image, and the buyers name, as in: "This image was produced and printed by (signature) JDMcGrew for (buyers name here). This sheet is acid-free and may affixed to the back of the matte by the framer, so that the signature and information is visible on the back of the print after framing.
Guarantee
The following policies apply exclusively to the original print buyer.
Although return requests are extremely rare, all standard size prints from Luminous Lands Photography are guaranteed, and may be returned for any reason without question. To receive a refund, the buyer must contact Luminous Lands Photography prior to returning the item, notify us of intent to return the print, and confirm with us the refund amount and return shipping plans (which must include a means of tracking the returned item).
If a standard size print (as listed under individual images on the luminouslands.com site) is returned in the condition it was shipped, in the original shipping package, within fourteen days of the receipt, Luminous Lands Photography will return 100% of the original purchase price paid, less the original shipping cost and the return shipping cost.
There are no refunds on prints ordered in custom sizes — prints ordered with dimensions that exceed or are otherwise different from those listed under each image on the luminouslands.com site.
Returned items that were purchased by credit cards will be credited within 5 business days of Luminous Lands' receipt of the returned print. For prints purchased by check, a check in the full purchase amount (less shipping costs) will be sent to the buyer following a ten day waiting period to ensure the buyer's check has cleared. The buyer is responsible for return shipping costs. If we are away from the office on a shoot, some delay in the refund schedule is likely.
Prints Damaged in Shipping
If you purchased a print that was damaged in shipping, Luminous Lands will replace the print and reship it at no additional cost within two weeks from our receipt of the returned print. To receive this service the buyer must repack the item in the original shipping materials, notify Luminous Lands and the shipper within 24 hours of receipt of the package, and note on the delivery confirmation that the print was damaged. Shipping costs for returned items are the responsibility of the sender. Use a return method, such as certified or signature-required, that allows tracking of your package.
