Candid, lost in the past... Greenwich Village, New York

Candid. Lost in the past. This gentleman stopped outside a florist's shop to gaze through the window at the red roses you see reflected on the glass. The layer of mist on the window softened but could not hide all of the creases and wrinkles of his features. Inside, opposite him, I took a single shot through the glass. I was in a rush to capture his unforgettable face before he walked away, but he did not move a muscle for almost twenty minutes. I could not take my eyes off his countenance, and I slowly came to a realization that was finally inescapable. This man was a holocaust survivor who had lost everything that he had held precious. Memories of long ago were like yesterday to him, flooding his mind as he stood transfixed. I still believe this today. Of all the photos I have taken in forty-five years, of all the subjects in all the places, this is my favorite image.    Greenwich Village, New York, 1969
